The Registry asks for a year, a chassis number and a color. Sometimes there is more: a note in the margin, from the owner or from somebody who knew the car.

A Runabout in Kharkov the sheet records as destroyed by bombing. A Bugatti body on a Ford V8, titled as a Morgan. Peter Morgan's own Plus 4 Plus. Every one of them came in as a note against a car.

Counted by what each one does. The bands are shares, so a decade with three notes reads as loudly as one with a hundred — the count is on the right.

  • The 1960’s carry the most 135 of the 353 notes are on cars from that one decade — the same decade the Registry itself knows best. The notes are thickest where the record already is.
  • 11 notes name who had the car before A previous owner, remembered against the car rather than in a record of sales. Nothing else in the Registry keeps that.
  • 52 claim a first, a last or an only The first Plus 4 built, the oldest surviving Series 1, the first Morgan delivered to Sweden. Claims made by the people who own the cars, recorded as they were made.
  • 6 record a car that did not survive Scrapped, burned, or destroyed. They stay in the Registry, which is the only place some of them still exist.
  • 75 notes are not notes at all They are a numbered factory build register for the Plus 4 Super Sport, typed into a free-text column one line at a time. It is the most complete run of cars in the Registry — see below.
  • The middle note is 30 characters long Half of them are shorter than a sentence. 127 of 353 say something happened; the rest are a detail about the car. Brevity is the form, not a shortcoming — "Tiller steering" is the whole note.

A factory register, found in the notes

The Plus 4 Super Sport, one to 103

Seventy-five of those notes are a factory build register, written one line at a time into a column meant for remarks: #4, Plus 4 Super Sport produced; 1961-06-21. Read in order it is the most complete run of cars the Registry holds — 67 of 103 found, 65%, against roughly one in ten everywhere else. Built between 10 February 1961 and 17 May 1968.
